Cinco De Mayo Family Fun Day

Since the world is in quarantine due to recent events, our family decided to have a family fun week. Each day we picked a theme and tried to base what we did around that theme from meals to crafts to movies and more.

Day 2 of our family fun week was May 5th - Cinco De Mayo which just so happened to fall on Taco Tuesday this year.

Our Cinco De Mayo family fun day schedule looked like:
  • Learned what Cinco De Mayo was
  • Drew and decorated Mexican Decorations - piñata, cactus, sombrero
  • Taco Tuesday & Virgin Margaritas
  • Paper Bag Baseball Piñata
  • Homemade Churros
  • Watched the movie Book of Life

We started out teaching the kids what Cinco De Mayo was. Since the kids are little, they don't really understand history but we still tried. The kids learned that Cinco De Mayo is a day to celebrate Mexican heritage and their victory over the French during the Battle of Puebla.

Craft
We then decorated paper bags with Mexican themed decorations on them. I drew piñata, cactus, and sombrero outlines and let the kids color them in. The kids then named their drawings.

You can use paper or cardboard and decorate them with markers, paint, crayons, or anything you'd like. I used paper bags and markers because I had them on hand and had a plan for the paper bags later. *See below

Game
I secretly fluffed the bags up and twisted the tops shut. I filled three bags with candy and snacks; one for each kid. I got out a plastic baseball bat. My husband carefully tossed the bags for the kids to hit. Once they hit a bag full of candy, the next kid got a turn. This game is a mixture of baseball and a piñata.

The kids loved playing piñata baseball and the surprises in the bags!

Food
Since Cinco De Mayo happened to fall on Taco Tuesday this year we couldn't help but have tacos for dinner. My husband made tacos, yellow rice, fiesta corn, refried beans, and margaritas. The kids chose to have taco salads instead or taco wraps. Yum!

My husband made the kids some virgin margaritas to try. Cheers!

After dinner we made Homemade Churros. We followed Fresh Mommy Blog's Churro Recipe. Churros are a fun and easy dessert/snack that the kids can help make. We also found a vanilla glaze recipe to coat and dip the churros in to add some flavor.

We ended the night watching the cartoon movie, Book of Life, and eating the churros. Another Mexican themed cartoon movie is Coco. While both these movies are more about the Land of the Dead, we figured it still worked. Plus I believe the movie, Book of Life, mentioned Cinco De Mayo briefly at the beginning.

There are tons of activities you can do to celebrate Cinco De Mayo from crafts like homemade piñatas to sombreros made from paper plates and plastic cups. You can even play Cinco De Mayo themed bingo. There are also tons of fun themed desserts and beverage you can make for everyone to enjoy. Have fun with it and be creative. Pinterest is a great place to start for inspiration!
