How to have a Themed Family Fun Day

Since the world is in quarantine due to recent events, our family decided to have a family fun week. Each day we picked a theme and tried to base what we did around that theme from meals to crafts to movies and more.

The kids finished their school work early so this was our way of celebrating all their hard work and trying to stay busy at home.

The kids had a blast and became a little spoiled while mommy and daddy may have took on more than we could handle. I loved our family fun week, but I will admit it was stressful at times because not everything was planned out and the kids became wild anticipating what was going to happen next. Needless to say, we all need to practice patience.

After a million questions and fun activities, we successfully had a family fun week.

Day 1 - Star Wars Day on May 4th.

Day 2 - Cinco De Mayo on May 5th which just so happened to fall on Taco Tuesday

Day 3 - Disney Day

Day 4 - Superhero Day

The kids voted Camping as their favorite theme day that we had so I will have to keep that in mind for next time. I think they chose camping because we set a tent up in the living room for them to sleep in OR because it was the last day so it was fresh on their minds when I asked.

Our family fun week was a fun experience. While it had its ups and downs, I think it's safe to say, overall, everyone had fun. When our week came to an end, my daughter was already asking what the next theme day was going to be.

I recommend every family having a family fun day. You don't have to go all out or even pick a theme, but any family time together is worth having! I'm told the kids grow up fast and one day they may not want to spend the day with you so have fun and cherish it while you can.

Why have a Family Fun Day?

Have a family fun day just because you can! You don't need a reason to have fun together as a family. A family fun day is a great way to bring the family together and bond. You can bond over crafts, food, and fun. The kids will love spending some time with you.

When should I have a Family Fun Day?

Anytime your family is free! You don't need a special occasion to have a family fun day or a family fun week. You can have it any day, any time, for any reason.

We just so happened to have it the first full week of May partially because my husband loves Star Wars and wanted to have a Star Wars day but you can have it any time you want. Spring Break, Summer, Christmas Break, the weekend, are all great times to celebrate with something fun. Get the family together one day and have fun.

What I Would Change

One thing I learned during our family fun week was to space out the fun days over a period of time and NOT five consecutive days. We will still have family fun days in the future but we will space them out next time. If we do decide to have them back to back, we my just stick to two or three days instead of five.

In the future, I will also plan out the days a little better. My husband and I kind of just winged it and it all worked out but it would have been less stressful if we knew exactly what we were going to be doing each day.

Overall it was a great experience and we are planning on doing it again!

Tips for having a Family Fun Day

Keep it Simple & Use what you already have
The more you try to do, the more stressful it can be. Keep it simple. You don't have to go all out, decorate your entire house, and spend a ton of money to have fun. In fact, you may not have to spend a dime. We managed to have five theme days and we didn't buy anything. We used items and food we already had at home. This is where planning can come in handy!

Let your kids pick a Theme
My husband and I picked out the themes because our kids are still young but if your kids are older, ask them what theme day they would like. Each kid gets to pick a theme and mom and dad have to plan a day around it. Your kid is more likely going to participate if it's a theme they like!

Be Creative & Teach Something New
Get creative with your theme days. Change things up. Do something your family wouldn't normally do. Let the kids have an extra dessert. Camp out in the living room. Turn off your phones and have some fun. Maybe teach your kids a new skill while at it like how to cook, or watch an educational video that goes along with the theme.

Keep Everyone in Mind
You want to make the themes and activities fun for everyone. Keep the age of your kids in mind. Try to come up with activities that they can all participate in so no one feels left out.

Take lots of Pictures
I don't know about you, but I love pictures. I like capturing the moment good or bad. While my kids may or may not remember our family fun week, I will have the pictures to look back at and be like, "Hey remember when we...".

Family Fun Theme Ideas

The possibilities are endless. You can pretty much pick any theme and have a fun day around that theme. All it takes is a little creativity and imagination.

Example: If your kid picks Bananas as their theme day, make banana recipes from banana cookies to banana bread. Have a banana smoothie. Wear yellow. Only eat yellow foods. Make a banana craft. Research how bananas grow. Watch a monkey movie and see how many bananas your kid can spot in the movie.

Just in case you are having trouble coming up with a theme, here are some fun family friendly theme days:

I'm Not Creative, How do I come up with Ideas?

Everyone has a little creativity in them, but don't worry, there are tons of resources out there you can use to plan a family fun day. You can start by asking your kids what their favorite theme is and what they may like to do then go from there. Pinterest and Google Images are great places to look for ideas. Pick a theme and specifically search for that theme. Write down or save what you like so you can come back to it later.

Example: If your theme is Banana then search Banana Party, Banana Crafts, Banana Recipes, Banana Activities, Banana Movies.

A family fun day is a day of fun and family bonding. It is a great experience and a great way to have fun at home. Pick a theme and have some fun. The possibilities are endless and the memories will last a lifetime.
