Since the world is in quarantine due to recent events, our family decided to have a family fun week. Each day we picked a theme and tried to base what we did around that theme from meals to crafts to movies and more.
Day 5 was Indoor Camping. We set up a tent inside and everything!
Our Camping themed day schedule looked like:
- Easy to-go lunch
- Set up a tent
- Decorated Toilet Paper Logs
- Collected Fake Fire Wood & Making a Pretend Camp Fire
- Dinner
- Handprint Fire Craft
- Card Games
- Indoor S'more's
- Watched Animal Shows
- Camped Out under the Stars
The Food
We tried to keep the food simple and make meals that you would make while camping. For lunch we had the kids make their own lunch. They made PB&J banana wraps, veggie straws, and granola bars. This is a kid friendly lunch that is easy for kids to make themselves.
I made a walking taco for lunch with some leftover taco meat we had from our Cinco De Mayo/Taco Tuesday family fun day. Walking tacos are an easy meal you can make while camping.
For dinner we had hot dogs, chips, and fruit.
There are several different meals you can make for your indoor camping themed day. PB&J sandwiches, lunch meat sandwiches, spam, trail mix, easy to grab fruit - apples, oranges, banana, and more! You can pretty much make anything that you can cook over a fire or that doesn't involve cooking at all.
After dinner we made S'more nachos in the oven. You pretty much cover the bottom of a tin pan with graham crackers, dump in some marshmallows and chocolate chips to your liking, along with some more graham crackers. Bake at 350˙ for around 8-10 minutes. You can easily burn the marshmallows and graham crackers so keep an eye on it.
This is an easy dessert to make and great if you have kids wanting to help since all they have to do is throw the ingredients in the tin pan.
Crafts & Games
I had the kids draw brown lines on some paper towel and toilet paper rolls. I them randomly placed them around the house and explained to the kids that in order to cook dinner, we need to make a camp fire. I told them to go collect some firewood and pointed at the paper towel rolls. Off they went hunting for fake firewood!
When all the fake firewood was collected, I had the kids build a pretend fire with the fake firewood and some tissue paper. They canary to balance the paper towel rolls on each other and use the tissue paper to keep the paper towel rolls up.
We also painted the kids hands and made a handprint fire. It turned out super cute and will be a great reminder of our family fun week.
As the night went on we gathered around the table to play some card games. We taught the kids Pass the Ace which is an easy game for all ages. We used candy to keep track of who lost. If they lost a round then they got to eat one of their three skittles. Cards are an easy thing to bring with you while camping and there are tons of different games you can play with cards.
Go Fish, Pass the Ace, Slap Jack, Spoons, Memory, and War are a few easy card games for kids to play.
Little man was super excited to be sitting at the table with us while we played games!
The kids then settled down and ended the night watching animal shows while in the tent. The animal shows helped make it feel like they were actually outside camping with the animals. When it was time for bed, we used my daughters clock/night light to project stars onto the ceiling. Two out of the three kiddos made it through the night sleeping in the tent. One snuck into their bed in the middle of the night.
There are tons of activities you can do to celebrate with a Camping inspired family fun day. You can go indoor camping like we did, camping outside, grill out, have a fire, make pretend S'mores out of cardboard, paint rocks, make a bird feeder, make a blanket fort, tell campfire stories, and more! Have fun with it and be creative. Pinterest is a great place to start for inspiration!
