My son recently turned four and for his birthday we threw him a paper airplane party. I didn't go all out because we just had immediate family down since we decided to announce we are expecting baby #4 at the party.
I tried to keep my son's paper airplane party simple. I went with a blue theme and made paper airplanes in different shades of blue. I only knew how to make one type of paper airplane so I looked up tutorials to make a variety of styles.
The Outfit
A while back I had mentioned throwing my son a paper airplane party but wasn't sure. While out shopping, my husband found a paper airplane shirt on clearance in my son's size. I have never looked for a paper airplane shirt but I'm assuming it's not a super popular pattern so clearly it was meant to be!
The Food
For the food I tried to think of food in the shape of a triangle. The food I decided to go with was:
- Pizza
- Variety of Chips - mainly Doritos although the picture doesn't show it
- Rice Krispies cut into triangles
- Fruit Roll Ups - to make airplanes out of
- Cotton Candy aka Clouds
- Dino Gummies - they don't match but my son wanted them
I'm sure there are a few other triangle shaped foods you could add. You could even cut sandwiches, cookies or brownies into the shape of triangles.
The goal behind the fruit roll-ups was to see if you could make a "Fruit Flyer" aka a Fruit Roll-Up Airplane. I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who attempted it but oh well... it was worth the try and the kids loved them!
The Beverages
You could very easily make a blue punch with sherbet in it to represent clouds to match the theme!
The Cake
The cake was simple and cute! I made a chocolate cake with white frosting and stuck skews with mini paper airplanes on the cake.
You don't want the frosting to be to smooth, you want it to be a little rough looking to represent clouds and to give texture to the cake.
The Decorations
Invitation
As usual, I made the invitation and sent it out to everyone via technology to save on money. You can easily make your own invite and e-mail it, message it, hand it to your guest in person, or print it out and mail it to your guest. Here is the invite I made from scratch:
Cake BackDrop
I still had the paper I used for my son's first birthday Monster backdrops so I decided to use them again to make a backdrop and game out of.
I cut some clouds out of white paper, glued them onto the blue paper and hung the paper over the window. You can us wrapping paper or a blue table cloth for your backdrop.
Table Decorations
I covered the table with a light blue table cloth, set a few medium size paper airplanes on the table and filled a mason jar with blue rocks and larger paper airplanes on chop sticks. All the supplies used, I already had but you could easily find similar items.
Paper Airplane Toss Game
With my husbands help, we cut up a large box, cut various size holes in it and covered it with the leftover blue paper. We then cut the holes out of the paper and I drew a few paper airplanes on it along with numbers for points.
My mom and I made several different styles of paper airplanes for the game. It was a lot harder to play than I thought it would be, especially because it is at a toddler's eye level, but it was still fun!
Paper Airplane Station
I set out some white paper so guests could decorate and create their own paper airplane to either race or take a chance at the Paper Airplane Toss Game.
I wanted to make a photo wall that said "Time Flies" with pictures of my son throughout the years but I didn't get around to making it so that it something cute and simple you could add to your party!
Overall my son had a good birthday party. He got lots of Batman and Spiderman toys and got to spend time with family. I can't believe how fast time flies when you have kids. I hope you enjoyed checking out pictures from his simple party, let me know what you think in the comments below!

ReplyDeleteI loved the idea! Very original.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
DeleteI know it's been a while, but any tips for how you got the toss game board to stay upright?
ReplyDeleteI left one of the box flaps on the bottom folded behind the airplane board. I think we had to put a brick on the flap to help keep it from tipping over. Hope this helps!
