It's spring time and the flowers are blooming everywhere I look. Dandelions, Lillies, Daisies, Tulips and more!
Every time my kids go outside they come running back with a handful of colorful wild flowers. They love to smell them, pick them and blow the Dandelions. It's crazy how something so simple and beautiful can give my kids endless joy!
Back in the day, people used flowers to paint with by mashing them up or pulling the color from the flowers. You can even use flowers like paint brushes if you really want to be creative.
I wanted to show my kids one way to make art with flowers so I gathered the supplies while my kids gathered some flowers.
Supplies:
- 2 pieces of Cardboard OR 1 longer piece
- White Paper
- Flowers
- Hammer
How to:
1. Gather your flowers and spread them out over your paper. Try to pick a variety of colors.
2. Make a flower sandwich - cardboard, white paper, flowers, white paper, cardboard
3. Give your child a hammer and let them hammer the cardboard, smashing the flowers. Make sure they hammer all over the cardboard but don't overdo it to avoid poking holes in the paper.
If you have more than one child, take turns or let them each have their own.
Make sure to monitor your child the entire time for safety reasons.
Toddlers + Hammers = Trouble waiting to happen
4. Open up your flower sandwich and see what happened.
If all goes well, the color of the flowers should of transferred onto the paper making some unique nature art! You may have to clear off the flower stems to see the transfer of colors.
Every piece will turn out different depending on the flowers used and how long and hard your child hammers the cardboard. This is a fun and easy activity for kids of all ages to do. It gets your kids outside exploring nature, interacting and creating fun nature art. It also helps your child let their anger out if they are having trouble dealing with anger. Just make sure to monitor your child during this activity so they use the hammer correctly!
If you can't tell by their smiles below, my kids loved this activity and I can't wait to do it again with them now that the flowers are blooming like crazy.
Let me know what you think in the comments below! I'd love to see see how your flower transfers turn out. Feel free to share them with me on Pinterest's "Tried It" or Facebook!
