This fall I decided that we needed more fall decor around the house so I got to crafting with the help of my husband. We made a Thankful Wood Centerpiece, a Wood Scrap Pumpkin and this reversible Happy Fall Y'all / Merry Christmas sign all out of wood scraps we had which make for inexpensive decor.
Last Christmas once all out Christmas lights were up, I decided we needed something to hide the pile of extension cords by our front door so when I was making the fall sign, I decided to make it reversible so I can use it for several months and it helps hide the extension cords.
Supplies:
- 2 wood pieces - 33" x 5.5"
- 2 wood pieces - 11" x 3.5"
- Saw
- Sander OR Sand paper
- 8 Screws & Screw Driver (nails work too)
- Orange, White, & Red acrylic paint & Paint brushes
- White, Red, Silver Paint Pens (Optional)
- Clear Wood Sealer
How To:
1. Cut the wood to the size you like. I used both scrap fence and pallet wood. The fence wood was cut to 33" long and the pallet wood was cut to 11" long.
2. Sand any rough edges.
3. Place the two long pieces side by side. Place the small piece across the top and attach with a screw or nail in each corner. Repeat for the other side.
4. Decide what side you want to say what and paint the wood a solid color. Let Dry.
I painted one side white and the other side orange.
5. I then used a paint pen to write what I wanted the sign to say. I hand wrote the words without an outline for this sign but if you prefer to transfer the words onto the wood and trace them you can check out Step 5 in my blog, Thankful Wood Centerpiece or check out Step 4 in my blog, Growth Chart Ruler Tutorial.
6. Fill in the words with acrylic paint and a small paint brush. Let Dry. Then repeat for the other side.
I didn't use the paint pens to fill in the words because I didn't want to use all the paint in the paint pens since they are expensive where as the acrylic paint is cheaper. Also I haven't had a lot of luck with white paint pens showing up without having to put about five layers on.
7. Optional - Outline the words with a paint pen to make them stand out. I outlined the words, "have","very" and "Merry" with a silver paint pen.
8. Once your words have dried you can put a coat of clear wood sealer on both sides of your sign. Let Dry. This will seal in the paint and help the wood last longer since it will be sitting outside in rain and snow. Make sure the sealer doesn't run down the sides because it will cause it stick and you may have to touch it up.
9. Place outside in the fall and reverse the sign after Thanksgiving for Christmas!
This is a great outside holiday decoration. It is also a very inexpensive decoration as long as you have all the supplies. I repurposed old fence and pallet wood and already had all the paint so I didn't have to pay anything. It works as a welcome sign, a beautiful outdoor decoration and it helps hid my extension cords from the Christmas lights. You can also make the sign any size you want, make it say anything you want and add decorations to it such as twine, flowers or snowflakes to make it fit your decoration theme.
