We have a pair of play binoculars in with our toy camping set but they are heavier and don't always stay attached around the neck so I decided to make a pair of binoculars out of toilet paper rolls. The toilet paper roll binoculars are very light weight and made the costume look more goofy which is what we were going for.
This was my second time making toilet paper roll binoculars. They are free and easy to make, plus the kids love playing with them and if they get destroyed, it's no big deal!
Supplies:
- 2 toilet paper rolls
- Glue
- Paper Clip
- Hand Hole Puncher
- Scissors
- Yarn, Ribbon OR String
- Markers OR Crayons - Optional
How To:
1. Put glue on the side of one of the toilet paper rolls.
2. Press the glue to the other toilet paper roll. Secure with a paper clip until dry.
3. Using a hole puncher, punch a hole in both the outer sides of the the toiler paper rolls. Don't punch the hole too close to the edge.
4. Tie the yarn through one of the holes. Make the yarn the length you want your "binoculars" to hang, cut and tie the yarn through the hole on the other side.
5. Optional: Since I made the toilet paper binoculars for a costume, I left the toilet paper rolls as is.
If you are making the binoculars for your kids or with your kids, you can let your kids decorate the binoculars however they want. You can use markers, crayons, stickers, etc... to decorate the toilet paper rolls.
You are officially done! How easy was that?
The longest part was waiting on the glue to dry which wasn't that bad. If you are impatient you can go ahead and punch the holes and add the yarn while the glue is drying. You can even have your kids color the toilet paper rolls before you glue them together so your kids don't have to wait for the glue to dry to decorate their new binoculars.
The pictures in this tutorial are from when I made the binoculars for my husband's Safari Guide costume. I have made this craft in the past with my kids though and they loved it. Since I have little ones, I had to do all the gluing and attaching the yarn but they colored their binoculars with crayons and had a blast playing with them. If you have older kids they should be able to do this craft on their own.
The binoculars only lasted a week or two because my kids can be rough on their toys but I didn't care because the binoculars were pretty much free to make as I already had all the supplies.
I loved that my kids used their imaginations when playing with the binoculars. My kids mainly pretended they were camping or searching for animals. You can easily take the binoculars on a nature hunt and see what fun things your kids can spot with their new binoculars. You could even use the binoculars to go cloud watching or pretend you are on a pirate ship in the ocean. There are so many different things your kids can use their new binoculars for, all you need is a few toilet paper rolls and an imagination!
I'm searching for a picture of my kids decorated binoculars so if I find one, I'll post it but for now my husband's costume binoculars will have to do!
