Planning a party can be stressful, especially if you decide to go all out. Your little one's birthday is fast approaching and you are planning their party - the food, the invites, the decorations. Speaking of decorations, if your little one is still in a high chair don't forget to decorate the high chair.
Why the high chair you may ask? If your little one is turning one, maybe even two or three, they are going to be sitting in a high chair when they enjoy their smash cake or birthday cupcake. You and everyone else at the party are most likely going to be taking pictures of your little one enjoying their cake, especially if it is their first birthday = first cake ever = great reactions + a mess.
Not all high chairs are the best looking so why not decorate it to match the theme of the party? No you don't have to go all out and spend a ton of extra money on your high chair decorations, after all it is a high chair, but it is a cute added touch to your little one's party plus it makes your pictures turn out a lot cuter!
I personally have only decorated the high chair for my little one's first birthday parties because I tend to go all out for the first birthday and since I had my children so close together they quickly got booted from the high chair to the booster seat which is a lot easier in my opinion.
There are several easy and cheap ways you can decorate your little one's high chair. Here is how I decorated the high chair for my little one's birthdays:
Tulle/Tutu High Chair
My daughter had a Pink Elephant Birthday Party for her first birthday.
I then placed a cheap table cloth on the ground under the high chair so I wouldn't have a messy floor that needed to be mopped. The table cloth makes for an easy and mess free clean up.
I used scrapbook paper and computer paper to make the O-N-E flags. Cut out three flags from your scrapbook paper and hole punch two holes at the top. Cut out the letters O-N-E and glue them to the flags. Thread some string or yarn through them.
Next cut the tulle it into 15-20 inch strips and wrapped it around the string or yarn, evenly spreading it out around the flags. When you are finished you can hang it on the highchair. You may need to tape it to the front to get it to stay. Basically you are making a tutu for the high chair.

My son had a Monster Birthday Party for his first birthday.
I covered the window behind the high chair with blue paper. A table cloth or wrapping paper will work as well. I then made eyes out of construction paper and taped them onto the blue paper. I cut out seven white pointy teeth and the letters O-N-E out of green construction paper. I then cut a strip of blue paper and glued the teeth to the blue strip. Next I glued the letters O-N-E onto the three middle teeth.
I taped the finished teeth to the high chair. When you back up, the window cover and the high chair decorations create monster. If you don't have place to hang the backdrop, you can easily attach the eyes to the back of the high chair with pipe cleaners or paper towel rolls so the high chair itself will look like a monster. You can make as many eyes and teeth as you want.

My second son had a Construction Birthday Party for his first birthday.
I originally made the "ONE" banner in the background to go around the high chair but I didn't like how it looked so I changed it the night before the party. We pulled a wood shelf from the garage and placed it behind the high chair. Taped the "Cake Smashing Zone" sign and the "ONE" banner to the wood shelf then taped yellow and orange streamers to the high chair.
Streamers cost around a $1 a roll and you can use them to decorate other places around the house. Our high chair has a removable tray so the streamers are taped in-between the two trays. A streamer high chair is a super easy and cheap way to decorate a high chair.

I ended up not using the banner on the high chair as I originally planned because I wanted to be able to see the dump trucks in the pictures but a banner is a cheap and easy way to decorate a high chair. I found free clip art and made the O-N-E signs. Printed them off on card-stock. Hole punched the images and threaded string through the cut outs to make the banner. You can then tie or tape the string to the high chair.

I know these are not pictures of a high chair but I wanted to show you another cute way you can decorate a high chair. For my wedding I made backdrops for the arch, the cake, and decorated the wagon with fabric scraps. I had some left over that I turned into a shorter version for a backdrop for my daughter's Easter pictures. You can see more pictures of the backdrop in my DIY Wedding under $5000 blog.
This high chair decoration can be cheap or expensive. It all depends on what material you get and where you get it. I bought several different sheet sets and cut them up. I made two big back drops and still had leftover sheets. You can buy cheap bed sheets or fabric or cut up old t-shirts, sheets, or use scrap fabric you may have lying around.
You can also use ribbon to get a similar look. Basically you cut several strips of fabric, tie it around a piece of string or in this case twine and attach it to the high chair. You can add a O-N-E banner/flags to the fabric strips like I did in the tulle high chair. I personally didn't use it to decorate the high chair because it did not match my daughter's birthday theme but I know it would look super cute as a hit chair decoration!
Hopefully this helps you come up with a cute way to decorate your little one's high chair.
