Lately my social media has been filled with pictures of hot chocolate bombs. From people asking were to find them to official bakeries and home bakeries posting them for sale. Everyone is creating and selling different variations of hot chocolate bombs. I will admit that I have never heard of a hot chocolate bombs before this year even though they have supposedly been around for a while and this is not a new thing, it's just what is HOT this season!

I love hot chocolate on a cold day, especially after a day out in the snow with kids. We made hot chocolate once this season and since then my kids have been asking for hot chocolate so needless to say we have had it a few more times.

Since my kids are asking almost daily if they can have hot chocolate, I decided to jump on the bandwagon and attempted to make the hot chocolate bombs with what I already had at home.

I will admit that I had no clue what I was doing, I did not spend time researching the best way to make hot chocolate bombs so there may be a better way to make them out there. All I knew was it was hot chocolate mix inside a chocolate shell.

I probably should of recorded us making the hot chocolate bombs because it was fun process! When I first dumped the hot chocolate mix, it went all over the place because there was too much in the bag. My daughter and I both ended up with the hot chocolate mix all over our shirts somehow and my boys tried to sneak the sprinkles and marshmallows. Needless to say, it was a fun experience!

Here is how we made our hot chocolate bombs incase you want to give it a try.

Cost:
I don't know the exact amount they would cost to make because I had all the ingredients at home but I'm almost positive it is a lot cheaper to make your own since they are selling them on average for $5 each.

I decided to do a little research just to see and based on the Walmart app (prices subject to vary):
Bag of Mini Marshmallows - $0.98-$1.77
Hot Chocolate Mix (8 pack) - $1.68
1 brick of Chocolate Bark - $2.98

Silicone Sphere Mold - $5 - $20 depending on where you buy it at

As you can tell, you can easily make at least eight hot chocolate bombs for about the price you can buy two hot chocolate bombs for.

Supplies:

  • Round Silicone Mold - Silicone Sphere Mold, Silicone Cupcake Liners, Snowflake Silicone Mold, etc...
  • Hot Chocolate Mix
  • Chocolate - Candy Melts, Chocolate Chips, Chocolate Bark
  • Mini Marshmallows
  • Sprinkles - Optional

How To:
1.  Melt Chocolate
You can melt your chocolate however you want. I melted four of the chocolate bark bricks in the microwave for a minute followed by thirty second intervals until melted. The four brick were just barely enough to make eight molds (four hot chocolate bombs).

If you use chocolate chips, you may need to add some vegetable oil to thin the chocolate.

2. Coat your silicone mold with a thin layer of melted chocolate.
I used eight individual silicone cupcake molds I already had. The cupcake molds were super easy to remove once the chocolate had hardened. To coat the molds, I spooned a few scoops of melted chocolate into the mold and used the back of a spoon to spread the chocolate out.

They sell silicone molds on Amazon. The most popular silicone mold I have seen used for the hot chocolate bombs is the sphere. I have also seen people using snowflake molds for the holidays. Whatever mold you choose, make sure it is big enough to fill with the hot chocolate mix.

3. Set in the refrigerator until hardened.
You may be able to let the chocolate harder at room temperature but my chocolate was melting to the bottom of the mold so I quickly placed the molds in the refrigerator. The refrigerator will help speed up the hardening process.

4. Melt chocolate edges
Warm up a pan on the stove. Gently touch one side of the chocolate shell to the warm pan to melt and smooth the sides.

5.
Quickly fill melted side with Hot Chocolate Mix.
The cupcake mold fit at least 3/4 a bag of hot chocolate mix, maybe a little more. The sphere molds should be able to fit the whole bag of hot chocolate mix in it. Add mini marshmallows, sprinkles, crushed mints, mini caramel bites, or anything else you'd like in your hot chocolate.

6. Combine Chocolate Shell to create the Shape
Repeat step 4 - Gently melt another piece of chocolate shell to smooth the edge and place on top of the piece filled with the hot chocolate mix. Make sure it is melted enough to combine the two sides. Smear the melted chocolate to seal the two pieces together. If needed you can add extra chocolate to combine the pieces so the hot chocolate mix doesn't fall out.

Since I used silicone cupcake molds and had my kids make their own, our chocolate pieces didn't line up perfect, but they still worked!

7. Serve with a cup of Warm Milk
Place your hot chocolate bomb in a large glass or coffee mug. Warm up a cup a milk for one in-a-half to two minutes. Pour the milk over the hot chocolate bomb and watch as it melts the chocolate outside and opens up. You may need to stir it to combine the mixture with the milk.

Here is a video of the hot chocolate bomb opening up. How cool is that?!?!

Overall we enjoyed the hot chocolate bombs. The kids liked making them and my son has been asking for hot chocolate every day since. I let each kid make their own chocolate mold and fill it with what they wanted. I then individually poured the warm milk over each of their hot chocolate bombs so they could watch the fun.

The hot chocolate was very chocolatey. Even though I wasn't able to fit all the hot chocolate mix in a bag in the mold, the chocolate shell made up for the difference. I added a few more mini marshmallows to my glass of hot chocolate because, who doesn't love mini marshmallows in their hot chocolate?!?!

I will admit that this is a super long way to make hot chocolate, but it is a super fun way to make hot chocolate that the whole family can enjoy.  If you are in a hurry to drink your hot chocolate, I recommend just making it per the directions on the bag or making the hot chocolate bombs in advance so you can quickly add milk and enjoy.

My family will definitely be making the hot chocolate bombs in the future. Maybe we will make it a winter tradition and make them next winter as well. Next time I hope to have some sphere molds so I can easily make some for everyone in our family but if not, my silicone cupcake molds got the job done. Hot chocolate bombs are a great treat for the kids and make fun gifts for your friends and family. Plus if you are on a budget, homemade hot chocolate bombs are cheaper and make for a fun family activity!

UPDATE (Feb. 2022)
I received some silicone molds last Christmas so this year I was able to make the hot chocolate bombs using those. The silicone molds made it so much easier to make.

Some things I learned making them with the molds are:

• You will need to let the chocolate harden, then add a second layer of chocolate, especially around the top before removing it from the mold.

• You can still melt the edges to make them even, but they do not connect as well. I found that the sides connect the best when you pipe chocolate around the center of the two sides to connect the hot chocolate bomb.

• You do NOT need to use the entire bag of hot chocolate mix. I used what I could fit in half of the hot chocolate bomb but you can use anywhere from 1T to half a bag of hot chocolate mix.

• I used the extra chocolate to pipe some lines on top and added sprinkles for decor!

• Hot chocolate bombs make excellent gifts for coworkers, teachers, family and friends, or just for you!
