I've had tissue paper sun catchers on my craft to-do list for a while and I finally got the chance to make one with my daughter. I probably would of eventually gotten around to making the tissue paper sun catchers this summer but our local library had them as one of their arts and crafts projects so I decided to go ahead and make them at the library.

The benefit of making the sun catchers at the library was that they supplied all the supplies for us! The Tissue Paper Sun Catchers are easy to make, cheap and are a great craft for kids of all ages. My daughter just turned two and was able to make most of the sun catcher (I helped with the glue and scissors).

If you don't want to use it as a sun catcher, you can turn the sun catchers into a small ornament for your Christmas tree or make a heart or flower bouquet for Valentines Day or Mother's Day by attaching them to a straw/stick/pipe cleaner. You can use them as holiday decor by making sun catchers that look like pumpkins, easter eggs, 4-leaf clover, etc...there are several different things you can do with the Tissue Paper Sun Catchers besides just hanging them on your window.

Supplies:

  • Freezer Paper
  • Tissue Paper
  • Construction paper - if you want a border
  • Lots of Glue
  • Paint Brush
  • Scissors
  • Cardboard base - Optional, it keeps the paper from rolling up and makes it easier to move while it is drying

How To:

1. Cut up or tear the tissue paper. You can cut it into small squares, triangles, lines, etc... this all depends on if you want a pattern to your sun catcher or if it is going to be random.

2. If you want a boarder go ahead and cut it out of construction paper. You can make any shape you want and use any color you want. You can go ahead and glue your boarder to the freezer paper and use it as your outline or wait until the end like we did.

We made a flower sun catcher but some other ideas are a heart, butterfly, star, cross, rainbow, animals, holiday theme, etc... be creative and make whatever you want to make!

3. Tear off a piece of freezer paper and tape it to a cardboard base if you want to, if not just lay the freezer paper on a flat surface.

4. Pour some glue onto to freezer paper and spread it out with a paint brush. My daughter loved helping spread the glue around. I think she thought she was painting.

5. Cover the glue with tissue paper. You can randomly place the tissue paper or make a pattern. Make sure to cover everything so you can't see the freezer paper.

6. Once the freezer paper is fully covered with tissue paper and you are satisfied, cover the entire thing with glue.

It is important to cover all the tissue paper with glue because the glue will hold everything together once it dries. You can see how much glue we used in the picture below.

7. Once the tissue paper is covered with glue you can go ahead and place your boarder on top if you haven't already. If you don't want a boarder then skip this step. Cover the boarder with glue.

8. Let Dry overnight.

9. Once the glue has dried completely, peal the freezer paper off the back and cut your sun catcher out by cutting around your boarder.

10. Hang your sun catcher on a window using tape or using a hole puncher, punch a hole in the top and hang the sun catcher with some yarn/string somewhere where the sun will shine through it.

My daughter loved making the Tissue Paper Sun Catcher and is so proud of it if you can't tell by her smiles in the pictures. My daughter is only two so of coarse I had to help her but she helped spread the glue and did most of the tissue paper. If your child is older and good with scissors then they should be able to make this craft with no problem. You can make any design you want and any pattern you want. Every sun catcher is unique and colorful. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial, I can't wait to make more sun catchers with my children!
